Jali… Cumalamwe… pr005s

Jali... Cumalamwe... Poi Records PR005s 21•5•15• Like so many others, I first met Jali Nyonkoling Kuyateh in Picccadilly Gardens. I was sat with GG who was touched by the honesty and realness of Jali's playing. We both just sat there and embraced the moment. Some time afterwards, I asked Jali to come to my home and play at a Solstice gathering. Not only did he play for hours, after food he led a little workshop with the children and folks that just wanted to 'have a go' then he continued throughout the evening playing for a few people at a time, away from the main party. Jali came back to my studio and we recorded 6 songs from which this single is brought to you. A simple set up in a large Georgian parlour. Just 4 microphones, flat EQ and recorded in just one take, ably engineered by Brendan and Richard. I asked Jali about the meaning of the words in this song. He simply said that it is "Advice to the young ones... They have to listen to the Elders and give them respect..." Each time I play these songs they move me, the ernest playing of tunes handed down from his forefathers, his ancestors. From The Gambia to Manchester and back out all around the world... savage jaw… attention is your middle name…

Savage Jaw Attention Is Your Middle Name Poi Records PR004s 5•5•15• He walks into the SpayceArk just for a chat about music, art and philosophy. He brings with him a bag of studio toys just in case we need to get something down. We chat, chill out and I see something honest and ernest in the way he talks. So we begin at 9pm... Note-by-note and track-by-track, a live performance, usually in just one take. Golden tea and smokes, a little rest and back on it, in it and all over it. At 03:33 the album is complete. Ok, there's a little bit of this and a little bit of that which need sorting out but we have this thing down. Everyone seems to have an opinion on where a track should go, how it should sound and all. I tend to have a firm belief in what I create with the musicians who step through the door. Uncompromising and pure. Give me 'honest' and deliver a performance that enables you as an artist, to reveal yourself to the listener. This song represents a statement of intent. Savage Jaw's simple truth. Rough, raw and real... Enjoy! Geo... May 2015...

Tracy Cupitt… Look To Your Ways Press Release… 3.4.15.

3.4.15. Poi Records release of Tracy Cupitt's debut single Look To Your Ways... PR002s Tracy Cupitt... Look To Your Ways... This is the debut single by singer songwriter Tracy Cuppitt from Glossop in Derbyshire, England. It's a cover version of a tune written by Pete Cheetham, multi-instrumentalist composer, from whose progressive classical rock composition it derives. I first heard Tracy sing a Gillian Welch tune on YouTube sometime last year. I played that tune continuously all thru the night and over the next couple of days. I was enchanted by the soft tones and colours in her voice. I met Tracy and asked her if she'd do me the great honour of recording in the Poi Spayce Ark studio. I identified with this song because of its soulful and loving sentiments and asked Tracy to come up with an arrangement that would make this song her own. She went away for a couple of months, tweaked it a little, changed the tempo and shifted the feel of the song. We recorded this in the Autumn of 2014. Simple set up. Three microphones, a guitar and Tracy singing and playing. I was sitting there with tears rolling down my face. Tracy touched me with her voice as her delivery was simple, straight up, genuine and honest. This version is the second take. I generally go with the first take of any tune I record because therein lies the magic, the Eternal Moment. So I'll revisit the first take for our future album cut. And here it is... 'Look To Your Ways' performed by Tracy Cupitt... Enjoy. Geo, March 2015.tc ltyw front tc ltyw back   Tracy Cupitt Biography I am an artist and singer songwriter based in Glossop, Derbyshire – Living amongst the natural beauty of the Peak District landscape, in the north west of England. I’d enrolled on a course in Wales because I wanted to be surrounded by nature. I began playing guitar in college, I was meant to be studying art but I think I spent more time walking in the welsh woods, teaching myself to play and discovering that I really love to sing. Someone in my art class lent me a tape of Nick Drake, and as I listened to the opening bars of Pink Moon I almost cried, I’d found something wonderful. That was many years ago now and I still find myself drawn to what I call ‘music with space’, space to relax, to breathe, to savour. In my artwork I am constantly seeking inspiration for my work; from the views around Glossop, the little town where I live, to travelling to far away places. I love the intricate shapes of leaves and plants, the vibrant colour of flowers, the delicacy of wildflowers, earl grey tea, cats, books, yoga and cheese! I was lucky enough to spend a year in Japan teaching English in 2008 and I continue to draw inspiration from my time there, you will often find cherry blossom in my artwork as I love it so much!   .........   HybridVigor... Whyrl… Elementz of Poi…

Elementz of Poi... PR000s "Modulating between the keys of B and A flat, keys of B and A flat... And resolving itself in E!" Louis Balfour, Jazz Club host... A piano being pushed out of a window, a cacophony of sounds clashing and then into a smoother groove... A bumble bee floating on the winds of change... A 3-note double bass and squashed beats... Elementz of Poi was recorded in Lower Broughton round the turn of the Millennium by Carl, Cassian and myself... We had serious fun creating it...   The art isn't what we produce... The painting, music, film or words created are simply an echo of life, capturing this, The Eternal Moment in which we exist. The real art IS that moment that we share together. The real art is you and me... This ain't a release, a top ten single or a one hit wonder... It's a statement, it's a view into the world of our creativity... I used to send this tune to A&R folks at record labels and mostly got ignored, occasionally I'd get a reply saying "It's not our kinda thing..." Or "It'd be difficult to 'monetise' this..." Ok-ok, I get it and maybe running a label now I can see the reasoning behind those points... But that's my point, we just make tunes and get them out there... Free to be what they are, little moments of time that we experience... I started Poi because I wanted to be in a position to release tunes that I and others have composed, tunes that wouldn't see the light of day otherwise... So, there's no fanfare here, no big launch... You'll get to hear a tune we made recently that is, let's say, 'easier on the ear'... The Purpose Of Instinct is survival... Expressing ourselves through creativity helps us to survive and enables us to share and live in and through the Eternal Moment... Geo, Manchester February 2015...Elementz of Poi
